Germany - Utilities (Electricity, Gas, Water)

230V 50Hz
European 2-pin plug-type

Germany's different states and regions have their own utility companies. There is a great deal of competition in the European energy market, and German residents can select the company which offers the best price.

If you are renting an apartment in Germany, it is likely that the building management company will arrange connection to the utilities on your behalf. If applying direct, you may have to show a copy of your passport and pay a deposit.

Electricity, gas and water usage are metered, with meters being read annually. The monthly amount payable is predetermined, and will be adjusted following the annual meter reading. It is usual practice to make the payments by automatic bank transfer or standing order.

Water is safe to drink from the tap in Germany.

There are strict legal regulations regarding recycling in Germany, and most buildings have a series of recycling bins. Residents are provided with detailed guidance regarding the colour-coding of bins and which to use for which forms of household waste.
