Gibraltar's position just south of Spain makes it relatively easy to travel there from various European locations. The country's airport is less than a mile from the town centre and travellers can make use of the regular bus service to and from the airport. Currently the only scheduled flights arrive from the UK and Spain. Visitors from other countries can fly to nearby airports in Spain such as Malaga and drive the short distance into Gibraltar.

There are plans to expand the airport and the number of flights received, although there are now several private flights arriving each day. There is currently a road which intersects the runway, which has to be closed each time a plane arrives or departs.

From the UK, the flight takes just 2 hours and 30 minutes and both British Airways and Monarch Airlines operate direct services, although budget airline Easyjet also operates a number of regular flights. The airport at Malaga is around a 90 minute drive away and also receives regular flights from the UK. Visitors from the UK can get a flight from several different airports, though mostly around the London area.

Gibraltar is a regular docking port for cruise ships and passengers regularly disembark to spend a day in the city. There is a ferry and catamaran service to and from Tangier in Morocco. Bus services run regularly from Malaga and Algeciras to La Linea and there are regular coach parties coming from Spain for the day.

Gibraltar itself cannot be reached by rail, but there are railway stations in San Roque and Algeciras in Spain, both of which are easily reached by car from Gibraltar. Drivers from Gibraltar cross the border into Spain at La Linea. This is the only border crossing, but is operated on a 24 hour basis. There are often long queues at the border crossing and drivers are often advised to park their car in La Linea and cross the border on foot.

Those waiting at the border to cross may occasionally be approached by a ticket tout trying to sell them a ticket to enter Gibraltar. These incidences are becoming less frequent and visitors are advised not to buy any of these tickets as they are not necessary. There is nothing to pay when entering Gibraltar.

Anybody trying to enter Gibraltar without the correct documentation – a passport in the case of EU nationals or a visa for those from other countries – will be turned away, both at the airport and at the border crossing.
