Climate and Weather
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuGibraltar - Climate and Weather
The winters in Gibraltar rarely see snow or frost, with the average lowest temperature at that time of year just 10°C. Winter does see the country experiencing heavy rain, with the worst in January. There is often an average of 6 inches of rain in just 10 days, although only around 30% of winter days are considered to be wet. Winter days have between 4 and 5 days of sunlight and humidity can be as high as 77% in November. The mild winters mean that the heavy clothing required in countries that are further north is not necessary.
Summer has an average high temperature of 29°C and up to 12 hours of sunlight each day. Summers are relatively dry. Any more than 1mm of rain in one day is very unlikely. It is not uncommon for several months to pass by without any rain at all. Temperatures in summer have been recorded as low as 13°C, though this is also rare. Humidity levels are lower in the summer months with the average in July around 66%. These conditions are ideal for those who enjoy sailing and diving and many come to Gibraltar to take part in outdoor activities for which good weather is required.
Gibraltar is protected to the north by the Sierra Nevada Mountains and to the South by the Atlas Mountains, meaning that Gibraltar is affected mainly by easterly and westerly winds coming through the Strait. Extreme weather is rare, although severe storms have been known to occur. The Gibraltar Meteorological Service is linked to the Met Office in the UK and they can be contacted directly for an up to date forecast.
Gibraltar is a good place for the expat who is looking to keep their western lifestyle but in a warmer climate. The good weather is also ideal for those who are keen on water sports such as sailing. The milder winters may also appeal to the expat who is hoping to retire to the country, avoiding the cooler conditions in some other countries.
