Employment
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuGibraltar - Employment
It is important to show that you are able to earn your own money and not want to claim from the Gibraltarian Social Security system. Taxation is quite high but workers can often make use of High Net Worth Individual status or become exempt as an expatriate executive. There are two income tax systems and taxpayers can select the one that results in the lower tax payments.
Salaries are comparable to those in the UK with administrators earning on average between 12k and 17k and IT professionals earning in the region of 25k to 30k. The working hours and bank holidays also follow a similar pattern. They also have the same employment laws that apply in the UK.
English is the official language and it is to your advantage when job hunting if you are fluent in it. There are several professions that are in demand in Gibraltar. All teachers there must have Qualified Teacher Status and be fully trained. Gibraltarians who wish to teach train in the UK, but a number of teachers there are expats.
Medical practitioners are also trained in the UK and again, a number of them are expats. There are some medical fields though where help is only required on occasion, so they are not employed full time and are usually flown in from the UK. Gibraltar is also becoming very attractive to tourists and there are an increasing number of vacancies in this field although many are seasonal. As there is limited space in Gibraltar, there are only a limited number of vacancies in the construction field.
There are a number of recruitment agencies that will recruit for positions in Gibraltar. Applicants should take care when choosing to use an agency as some will ask for a fee. A reputable agency would only request a fee from the employer.
