There are a number of water sports clubs, which include sailing, diving and snorkelling. There are three marinas where yachts can be moored and hired and there are sailing courses available for beginners. There are a number of shipwrecks in the waters around the Rock and divers take the opportunity to view them. For those who have never tried diving, the marinas are home to several certified diving instructors who offer courses to advanced levels.
Golf is a popular sport on Gibraltar, with many residents taking the opportunity to cross the border into Spain to play on one of the many courses there.
For the less sporty there are plenty of tourist attractions to visit. The Gibraltar Museum was launched in 1930 and focuses on the both the natural history and culture of Gibraltar. The Moorish Castle dates back to the eighth century and is situated in the old part of town. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve attracts large numbers of visitors each year and is home to the Barbary apes. The Rock offers excellent views of Gibraltar, Spain and the north coast of Africa.
There is an open air theatre and indoor theatre where a number of shows and musical events are performed. All the latest films are shown at the cinema and it is advisable to buy tickets in advance. Several of the hotels offer spa facilities for those who prefer to spend their leisure time relaxing and being pampered.
As a multi-cultural society there are restaurants which serve a wide range of cuisines, with many situated near the marinas for the excellent views. As yet there are few restrictions on smoking in restaurants and public places and Gibraltar has all the well-known fast food establishments for those who prefer a familiar name.
