Employment

Greece - Employment

There are many opportunities for teaching English, also French and German, at the numerous private language schools (frontistiria) on the mainland and the islands.

Officially, according to the Greek Embassy, to acquire a permit to teach English in Greece you need the following qualifications:

- A validated university degree
- A certificate of proficiency in Greek

The Hellenic Ministry of Education/Department of Private Education issue the permits:

Mitropoleos 15
Athens 101 85
Tel.: 0030 210 3231656
Website: www.ypepth.gr

Unofficially, many frontistiria will employ native English/French/German speakers without the above qualifications although a TEFL / TESOL certificate will be an advantage.

Further information on teaching can be obtained from:

PALSO (Panhellenic Association of Language School Owners)
Likavitou 2
Athens 10671
Tel. (0030) 210 3640 792
Website: www.palso.gr

On the islands there is seasonal (summer) work to be had in bars, restaurants, hotels and with travel companies.

Opportunities for year-round employment, even for fluent Greek speakers, are limited - particularly on the islands.

More information from EURES - The EU Job Portal: www.europa.eu.int/eures/home.jsp?lang=en

EU citizens do not require a work permit.

Non EU citizens require work and residency permits to work legally. Check with your Embassy.
