Taking Your Pets

Greece - Taking Your Pets

The standard requirements for bringing a pet into Greece are that your pet must be micro chipped and registered, and must have had a rabies vaccination within the last 12 months, but more than 30 days ago.

Throughout the EU there are standard rules for the issuing of a PET passport and animals travelling within the EU are required to have one. More information on the passport scheme and travelling with pets is available on the DEFRA Website: http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/pets/regulation/eu_reg.htm

Pets must be transported by an authorised carrier. Olympic Airways and other International scheduled airlines will transport pets to Greece.

Make sure you locate a local Vet ('ktiniatros') and obtain an emergency telephone number as soon as you arrive in Greece with your pet. Unfortunately poisoning of animals is a fairly common occurrence. Dogs and cats may eat something coated in poison, or get poison on their paws and lick it off. If you suspect your pet has eaten poison contact your vet immediately. Intravenous drugs to counteract the effects must be given as quickly as possible.

I have some info you might like to add about travelling with pets in Greece. I was travelling with a small cat. In f.ex. Athens and suburbs it is very near impossible to get a taxi when you have an animal with you. In Glifada f.ex. it took me over 4 hours to find a taxi that would drive us to and from Athens airport, even though my little cat was of course in a secure travelling box, chipped, vaccinated, calm, a "frequent flyer" and so on...

When/if you finally you finally DO manage to find a taxi, expect to pay a heavy surcharge and also be prepared, that your pet may not even be allowed into the cabin of the car, but will only be allowed in the trunk.

Travelling in Greece with pets can at times be both expensive, distressing (for both owner and pet!) and very time consuming...

Happy travels!

I have been trying to get my dog and 3 cats back to the UK from Mykonos Greece. Near on impossible, if they are to be out of distress!! No Charter flying direct wants to know and the domestic flights to Athens say my dog box is too big to go in the hold! The only other alternative is to travel to Athens by Boat (5hrs!!) the day before, whereas the other lady said I will not get a taxi and very unlikely a hotel to house my little ones for the night.
