Communications (Telephone, Post, Internet, TV, Radio)

by Amanda OlssonBroadband is cheap and can be installed easily in most areas of the island although it may be different in the outlying areas of the island. Fax machines are widely used though and most expatriates end up buying one on their arrival as it is the normal method of communication on the island although over time this is likely to change.
Postboxes are purple and green and post offices are generally well-hidden and hard to find. You may find yourself walking in circles trying to locate them.
As far as television is concerned, programmes can be broadcast in either Mandarin, Cantonese or English. Additionally, televisions have a function that allows them to receive programmes broadcast in simultaneous languages. This is called Nicam and generally an announcement will be made stating that it is a Nicam broadcast.
You may also wish to ensure that your TV can pick up English stations and not just the local ones. Cable is useful for English language shows as you will otherwise be limited to two stations.
