Healthcare and Medical Treatment

by Amanda OlssonGood medical facilities are available, and there are many Western-trained physicians in Hong Kong. Doctors and hospitals generally do not accept credit cards and require immediate cash payment for health services. Check with your health insurance company before undertaking any travel.
We also found a local paediatrician (who was open on Sunday mornings) to be very helpful. Check with other expatriates as to their recommendations and advice as different nationalities and individuals often expect different specialities or skills from their doctors. For example, our domestic helper preferred to see a doctor from the Philippines for her own medical needs rather than consulting with our family doctor. Modesty issues, language and cultural issues were all factors in her decision.
During our time on the island we had a number of normal childhood type accidents from stitches to a short episode with Beijing Flu and we found the medical system to be excellent.
