Hong Kong - Visas, Residency, Immigration & Documentation

by Amanda Olsson

Visas

You may or may not need a visa depending on your birth and nationality. Check out the Hong Kong Government website http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4.htm or contact your local authorities for more information.

Depending on your arrangements with your employer they may undertake all of these administrative issues on your behalf. Contact the Human Resources department of your firm and they will probably have the necessary forms and advice.

Customs

Hong Kong SAR customs authorities enforce strict regulations concerning temporary importation into or export from Hong Kong of controlled items such as firearms and ammunition, ivory, narcotics, medications, animals and plants, meat and poultry, textiles, and sensitive high-technology or military products. Travellers bringing these goods into Hong Kong without a license can be prosecuted and the goods seized. The penalty for trafficking in dangerous drugs can be life imprisonment and a heavy fine. Other items that travellers must declare to customs officials are liquors, tobacco, cigarettes and cigars, methyl alcohol and merchandise imported for commercial purposes. There are no currency restrictions for travellers. Check out the web site of the Hong Kong Department of Customs and Excise (http://www.info.gov.hk/customs) for specific information regarding Hong Kong customs requirements.
