Employment
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuIreland - Employment
All EU/EEC nationals, including nationals of the accession countries who joined the EU in May 2004, are free to take up employment in Ireland. Non-EU/EEC nationals are required to obtain a work permit or a work authorization visa to work in Ireland.
Traditionally, Ireland has issued many work permits for low-skilled work, unlike other EU countries. More recently, the Government has imposed restrictions on work permits for low-skilled workers from non EU countries, and new policies are being introduced along the lines of a Green Card quota system for skilled migrant workers. This system is expected to be introduced in 2006.
There are many on-line jobsites advertising jobs in Ireland, some specializing in particular sectors such as catering and healthcare. A high proportion of the jobs advertised online are based in Dublin. Job adverts also appear in national and local newspapers.
Nationals of Canada or New Zealand who are aged between 18 and 30 can work in Ireland for up to a year on a Working Holiday visa, which must be obtained prior to arrival in Ireland.
