Bank Accounts

Italy - Bank Accounts

When you move to Italy, you are likely to need a bank account.

Most banks will only allow foreigners to open an account if they possess the full residence certificate ('certificato di residenza') as opposed to the permesso di soggiorno. If you have a choice, opt for a bank with branches near you, so you can deal with staff face-to-face if the need arises.

If you do not have a certificato di residenza, you could try approaching Italian banks that have offices ('filiali') in your home country - these are likely to include Banca Commerciale Italiana, Banca di Roma and Banca San Paolo Imi. The bank's office in your home country can then liaise with your chosen branch in Italy.

You will need to provide the following to open an account:

- Valid passport
- Valid certificato di residenza
- Proof of address in Italy - utility or telephone bill or rental contract
- Birth certificate
- Proof of your income - like a tax return or employment contract
- Reference from your home bank
