Electricity, gas and water are provided by a range of different companies in Japan. When you move into an apartment, you will generally be provided with the application forms required to arrange connection of supply. Some landlords will deal with the utilities companies on behalf of their tenants.
Gas is generally used in Japan for cooking, gas heaters and water heaters. There are differences in the type of gas used in different parts of the country and provided by different suppliers, so it is important to ensure that your appliances are compatible with the gas type provided.
Utilities costs are high in Japan. Typical total costs for gas, electricity and water for a single person in a small traditional apartment are reportedly around JPY16,000 per month, and will be much higher for families and those living in modern apartments and houses.
Household refuse should be separated into burnable, non-burnable and recyclable items, and separate bins are usually provided. Refuse is collected weekly or more often.
