The telephone country code for Jordan is 962. 96% of households have at least one main land line. Public call boxes operated by cards are common place in most big cities and tourist sites and cards can be purchased at numerous shops. A three minute minimum charge for international calls is enforced by hotels and post offices.
Mobile phone signal coverage in Jordan is good. Many roaming agreements exist among international mobile phone companies and around 86% of the population has a mobile phone and 10% have more than one.
There are many internet cafes throughout Jordan. 40% of Jordanian households have a home computer. This number is expected to double in the coming years as the sales tax on PCs and internet service is reduced by the government in an effort to make Jordan the hi-tech capital of the Middle East. Jordan is likely to surpass ICT giants such as India and Israel if these reforms continue, as the government has overwhelmingly supported this initiative and heavily invested in Jordan's ICT sector, resulting in it being the most competitive ICT industry in the region as well as giving Jordan one of the highest internet penetration rates in the region.
Every university student in Jordan will also be provided with a laptop in partnership with the private sector. The Jordanian Government is purchasing computers and smart technology to be equipped in classrooms, as all schools are connected with internet service. By 2011, Jordan is expected to have a 50% internet penetration rate, 35 000 persons employed in the ICT sector, and over $3 billion in revenues.
The Central Post Office in Amman is the only post office where packages should be sent. Packages should be left opened for Customs officials. Airmail to Western Europe takes three to five days for delivery. There is also a rapid delivery service that guarantees delivery within 24 hours to around 22 different countries. Post office opening hours are as follows: Saturday to Thursday 08:00 to 19:00 in the summer and 07:00 to 17:00 in the winter. On Fridays they are open from 07:00 to 13:00.
Jordan Media City (JMC) is a private company with government support. Jordan's television and radio services are centralised through JMC, who currently transmit 120 programme channels. Freedom of the press is tempered by local sensibilities. Jordan Radio and Television is a state run company which provides services in Arabic, English and French. The Jordan Times, available daily and The Star, available weekly, are the English-language newspapers.
