Currency and Cost of Living
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuJordan - Currency and Cost of Living
As a destination for expats, Jordan has a relatively low cost of living, particularly when compared with other Arab states. The cost of groceries is reasonable, especially if you choose to purchase local brands rather than imported varieties. Some utility costs can be fairly high, particularly if you use air conditioning and central heating. Expats with children who choose to educate them at private schools should also factor in school fees as part of their living expenses. Buying clothes can also be expensive if you wish to purchase imported western brands.
The cost of using public transport or running a car is very reasonable compared with similar costs in western countries but extras such as having an internet connection at home can prove to be more expensive. The cost of renting property is also fairly reasonable when compared with the rental cost of similar properties elsewhere.
It is not uncommon for a shopping trip in Jordan to turn into somewhat of a social occasion, particularly in small shops. Very often you will be offered a complimentary cup of tea or coffee before getting your shopping done. Some of the shopping malls will have a similar choice of shops that can be found in western countries, alongside more local and individual stores.
Shopping hours can be quite flexible, some shops are open from 9:30 to 13:30 and 15:30 to18:30, whereas others may be open longer hours, from 8:00 to 20:00. Many shops close on Fridays, but the Suq does not. Earlier closings are in effect during most of the month of Ramadan.
Banks in Jordan are open Saturday to Thursday from 08:00 to 12:30, some of which reopen again in the afternoon from 15:30 to 17:30. Friday is a weekly holiday in Jordan, banks and government offices as well as most businesses will be closed.
