Speaking the Language

Kuwait - Speaking the Language

The main language used in Kuwait is Arabic, although the use of English is increasing every day and it is fast becoming the country’s second language. Other languages that are used on a daily basis include Urdu, Persian and Hindi, with several European languages being brought into the country by immigrants.

The version of Arabic spoken in Kuwait is known as Gulf Arabic and Arabic lessons are widely used in schools to ensure that all children are fluent in the language. Around half a million people have Arabic as their first language. The dialect used in Kuwait is known as Hadari though there is not a great deal of difference between Hadari and other Arabic dialects, although there are some minor pronunciation differences.

School children are also taught English and many of the Kuwaiti people are bilingual. As a result it is not absolutely essential for an English speaking expat to learn Arabic, as they will be able to get by without it. There are a number of radio and television broadcasts in English and newspaper s and magazines are also available in the language.

Those who are moving to the country for work may be offered language training in Arabic if it is a necessary part of the job. There are a number of foreign companies with a base in Kuwait which will use English as the main language for work. If neither of these is the case then it may be necessary to take some language lessons. Being able to converse at least a little when you arrive in the country is a good idea, and the use of ‘teach yourself’ CDs and books can help with this. It may also be possible to take an evening course in your home country.

There are several language schools in Kuwait which offer a variety of courses, ranging from short intensive courses for those who need to learn quickly, to evening courses for people who are able to take more time or who are learning for pleasure. Arabic is not easy to learn, particularly for westerners who are not familiar with the script. A language that is written right to left can be alien to westerners, but it is possible to learn to speak the language without having to spend too much time learning to write it, though this will be an advantage for those who can persevere.
