Healthcare & Medical Treatment

Luxembourg (City) - Healthcare & Medical Treatment

Emergency Medical Assistance: 112

There are four general hospitals in Luxembourg – there are no private hospitals in Luxembourg. All hospitals are run by Caisse de Maladie, and they offer comprehensive medical and surgical treatment, in addition to specialized care. There are two pediatric and obstetric clinics in Luxembourg City.

All non-emergency hospital admissions require a referral from a general practitioner. A white "H" on a blue background is the sign for hospitals in Luxembourg. Hospital care standards are very high in Luxembourg, although some expatriates feel that the practices / manners may differ from those of their home country. There are three classes of wards – first, second and third class wards. First class wards usually mean a single private room and cost a lot more than the third class wards that usually have more than three patients. Not all hospitals have emergency services facilities.

Medications over the counter are strictly regulated in Luxembourg. In most cases, you will be asked for a prescription when at the pharmacy. For healthcare products such as contact lens solution, vitamins or common cold remedies, you may sometimes be asked to describe your symptoms before you are given these non-prescription medications. Chemists are found throughout Luxembourg City, and they are identifiable by their illuminated green cross signs. Chemist shops are usually small and operate during normal shopping hours only. Usually, there will be one chemist on duty after normal shopping hours to attend to emergencies.
