Leisure, Entertainment & Sports

Luxembourg (City) - Leisure, Entertainment & Sports

Expatriates living in Luxembourg City will not feel short-changed when it comes to leisure, entertainment and sports options.

For single expatriates, the bar and night scene in Luxembourg City has developed substantially over the past couple of years. There are now new entertainment districts, and ample bars, cafés, hip bistros and restaurants to cater to the growing needs of the City. The bars around the City Center, the "Alstad" (old part of the City) and Hollerich are popular with expatriates. Some popular cafes can also be found around the Aldringen Bus Station. The Luxembourg City Council supports the development of the night scene by introducing in 2007, a night bus service. This is a great option for bar hopping expatriates – especially for those who drive. Try this website for the latest news on bars and restaurants in Luxembourg City.

For expatriates interested in networking and business opportunities, there are several international organizations and Chambers of Commerce that organize regular seminars and social / networking events. For examples, the American Business Association Luxembourg (ABAL - Email info@amcham.lu), The American Chamber of Commerce in Luxembourg (AMCHAM – Email info@amcham.lu or website www.amcham.lu) or the British Chamber of Commerce for Luxembourg (email; info@bcc.lu; website www.bcc.lu).

Expatriates with families and / or accompanying spouses can also join one of the many social / support groups, such as the American Women's Club of Luxembourg (AWCL – website www.amcluxembourg.com), the British Ladies Club of Luxembourg (open for all English-speaking women in Luxembourg regardless of nationality – email members@bcl.lu; website www.blc.lu ), La Leche League Luxembourg (support for breastfeeding mothers – email lalecheleague@internet.lu; website www.lalecheleague.lu) and Luxembourgish Schools Support Group.

Throughout the year, there are a plethora of festivals and activities in Luxembourg City for the family and single alike. These festivals and events are a great way to be exposed to the Luxembourgish culture. There are open-air music concerts, annual events like the Blues and Jazz Rally and winter lights in December, festivals (complete with amusement rides). Check out the Luxembourg City Tourist Office website at www.lcto.lu for the latest updates. You can also try the monthly magazine, Rendez-Vous (Email to request for complimentary subscription at rendez-vous@vdl.lu). The magazine can also be found at the City Hall, Bierge-Center, Luxembourg City Tourist Office and in most cultural facilities.

There are also many sports clubs and facilities throughout Luxembourg for the sports enthusiast. The Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce published a helpful booklet on living and working in Luxembourg, and lists a range of sports and recreational facilities found in Luxembourg. Click here to download the free publication.

As Luxembourg City is very centrally located within Western Europe, many expatriates tend to spend their weekends traveling to nearby cities and towns.
