Healthcare and Medical Treatment
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuMalaysia - Healthcare and Medical Treatment
All Malaysian residents are eligible for medical treatment from government clinics and hospitals, as well as a wide range of private clinics, but most expatriates and many Malaysians opt for the many private clinics and hospitals which can be found everywhere, for example in shopping malls or business complexes. These usually require immediate cash or credit card payments for health services. It is acceptable to approach specialists or hospitals directly without a GP referral.
Since private medical care can be very expensive, it is advisable to join a private insurance scheme before departure to Malaysia, and to take out comprehensive medical/travel insurance covering all eventualities.
Psychological and psychiatric medical and counseling services are very limited in Malaysia.
Some tropical illnesses are prevalent in Malaysia and it is important to seek up-to-date medical advice regarding any recommended vaccinations before traveling. Tuberculosis, Hepatitis A and B are common, as is Dengue Fever, for which there is no vaccination or immunisation. Malaria is only a risk if you venture deep into the jungle areas.
A high standard of food hygiene is prevalent in Malaysia and those involved in food preparation are subjected to Health Ministry controls. Food handlers undergo regular screening against diseases. Nevertheless, it is important to observe common sense when selecting somewhere to dine - if eating from outdoor stalls, ensure that they are clean and that the food is freshly prepared.
At certain times of the year smoke haze, caused by forest fires, can reduce both air quality and visibility. Those with respiratory conditions should take special precautions at these times.
