Malta's main commercial banks are the Bank of Valletta and HSBC (previously Mid-Med Bank). Both of these banks have branches throughout Malta and Gozo, and they offer a range of personal and business banking services, including non resident offshore account facilities. Accounts can be opened in any currency. It is easy to open a personal or business account at any of Malta's major banks, and some offer the facility to open an account via the internet. You are likely to be asked for your passport or IC number, and if you are working in Malta you may also be asked for a copy of your work permit.
Although there are now no exchange controls on the import or export of currency, anyone entering or leaving Malta in possession of LM5000 or more is required to complete a customs declaration form.
Banks in Malta are usually open Monday to Friday from 8.30 a.m. until 12.30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.
Currency and travelers cheques can be exchanged at banks, bureaux de change, and a number of larger hotels, shops and restaurants in Malta. ATMs are widely found throughout the islands. Credit and charge cards including American Express, Diners Card, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted.
