Social Security

Morocco - Social Security

The social security system known as Caisse National de Securite Sociale (CNSS) serves employees in the fields of agriculture, commerce, craftsmanship, fishery, forestry, liberal professions and industry. It is mandatory for all employers to participate in the program and they are responsible for enrolling all employees in the program. Expats are considered an equal part of the Moroccan workforce. With regards to expats participation in social security, participate fully, and are afforded the same benefits as Moroccans. Benefits of social security in Morocco include maternity leave, sickness and invalidity allowances, disability compensation, retirement pensions, and death allowances. The social security system also covers industrial and commercial workers any daily allowances for illness and injury not covered by workman’s compensation. Employers contribute approximately 6% of the company payroll to social security, while employees contributions are about 3% of earnings. This amount is automatically deducted from an employees payroll so no further action is needed by the employee for contribution.

Morocco has several bi-lateral social security agreements with other countries. Those countries are France, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Romania, Libya, Tunisia, Canada, and Portugal. There are several other countries that have not yet signed agreements or are still in negotiation.

There are two official websites of Morocco where expats can find information regarding social security in Morocco:

National Social Security Fund: www.cnss.ma

Moroccan Retirement Fund: www.cmr.gov.ma

Private insurance is available, and although not entirely necessary, foreigners might consider a personal policy with greater benefits in case of accident, injury or death as well as for retirement pensions.
