New York - Employment

In a city the size of New York City, finding a job presents some incredible opportunities as well as some unique challenges. Naturally, there are dozens of websites that offer job listings in New York. Most are not limited to New York, though you'll find some that indicate a focus on the local job market. One of those is at http://www.nycemployment.com/ where you can search by category or post your resume.

If you're looking for employment agencies in New York City, you should probably check out the listings of these agencies at http://yellowpages.superpages.com/listings.jsp?C=employment+agencies&CID=520994&T=nyc&S=ny&R=N&search=Find+It&SCS=1&SRC=promo7&QCID=856596086423 where you'll find more than 1,000 agencies and employers. Many have links so that you can go directly to the agency's website.

You'll find the New York City Transit Authority among the city's larger employers. Check out available jobs and how to apply at http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/hr/. Other city services and government agencies have similar job sites. Log on to the city's homepage to start your search for jobs in city government.

One place to go for help finding a job is the Small Business Services and Workforce1 - an agency dedicated to several aspects of life in New York, including matching employers with those looking for a job. The SBS offers a range of services, including career counseling and training for those in the job market. You'll find Workforce1 Centers in several areas of the city, or you can visit the agency's website at http://www.nyc.gov/html/sbs/wf1/html/home/home.shtml.

The Department for the Aging offers job services for seniors, including placement and training. Visit the agency at NYC Department for the Aging, Senior Employment Services, 220 Church Street, New York, New York 10007 to find out more about the services offered, or check out their website at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dfta/html/employ.html. For those with disabilities, the New York City Placement Consortium offers services to aid with job placement. The agency states that it's mission is not to become a 'job fair,' but does offer support services and links to other relative agencies. You'll find information about this NYCPC at http://www.vesid.nysed.gov/nycpc/home.html.

Unions are good sources of information about job opportunities, and NYC is no exception. Local 2054 is the union for College Assistants, offering to fill special needs for students, including sign language interpretation. You'll find their website at http://www.dc37.net/about/locals/local2054.html. You'll find similar information from the NYC District Council of Carpenters at http://www.nycdistrictcouncil.com/offsitelinks/Newspapers/gothamgazette.htm.

If you're a teacher or looking for a position in the education industry, you'll find job listings at many of the schools and colleges around the city. For help finding jobs or to learn what you need to become a teacher or paraprofessional in the New York educational system, check out the Teach NY website at http://www.nycenet.edu/teachnyc. Included at this site is a link to vacancies in the New York Public School system at any given time. Look for educational positions in New York City and across the state at http://www.nyedjobs.org/.

There are a number of agencies in the city that offer free or reasonably priced job placement services. Naturally, the larger newspapers in the area are good sources of employment information, as are area trade magazines and journals.
