Panama - Retiring

Page: 1/2

Many foreigners retire to Panama because of the tropical climate, lower cost of living and good health care. There is a growing community of expatriates, and with recent positive press coverage in the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, and USA Today, plus solid recommendations from the AARP, more expatriates will surely be coming soon.

This attention means that plenty of construction is taking place. While it may be difficult to find existing or older homes that have all the amenities you are looking for, there are plenty of new developments coming on line that are serving foreigners moving to Panama. In Boquete, a popular destination, family homes start at $160,000 in some new developments and go up to $400,000 in certain cases. In other areas, and outside of gated communities, prices are lower; the home's price will depend on the location and amenities. A good quality home, close to an area favored by expats, with many of the amenities you expect, will run from $80,000 to $120,000. Homes over $250,000 are commonly available, but these are real luxury homes in prime locations.

Many retirees prefer living in the new gated communities that are being developed in most areas of the country. These offer common areas such as pools or beach clubs, play areas and tennis courts. Access is limited and the building codes are commonly more restrictive than in areas outside these communities, which can lead to increased property values.
