The Polish telecommunications system is fairly poor particularly in rural areas, and it can be difficult to make connections. The system is gradually being modernized and is already of a much higher standard in the cities and larger towns. The fixed-line market was liberalized in 2003, but is still dominated by TPSA, the previously state monopoly supplier. TPSA is now owned mainly by France Telecom.
There are a number of internet providers, but call rates are expensive and connection speeds can be poor. There are many internet cafes in the main towns and cities. Some operators now offer combined television, telephone and internet cable packages.
Mobile phones are becoming increasingly popular in Poland. There are three networks, operated by Era GSM, Orange and Plus GSM.
Poland's postal service is reportedly quite slow, with airmail taking at a week or two to be delivered between Poland and other destinations. Within Poland, the railway mail service is apparently the fastest way to deliver post and packages between cities.
