You must present a passport or valid ID card when engaged in any kind of banking transaction, from opening an account to withdrawing or exchanging money.
The majority of banks have a foreign currency exchange department. Current exchange rates are prominently displayed. If you anticipate the need to exchange a large amount of currency it is advisable to notify the bank in advance.

Foreign bank branches are well represented in Lisbon.
There are numerous ATMs (Multibancos) located in virtually all towns and cities. All major credit cards are accepted.
Foreign denomination Traveler's Checks are widely accepted. In order to minimize exchange fees, it is best to utilize Traveler's Checks in Euros, Pounds Sterling or US Dollars.
You may import unlimited amounts of foreign currency into Portugal, but for amounts in excess of approximately $6000 you are required to alert customs authorities. Exporting foreign currency is currently unrestricted, although currency exchange receipts may be requested upon departure.
