Social Security

Portugal - Social Security



Citizens of EU member nations working in Portugal will generally be covered by a social security scheme. Credit for social security contributions outside of Portugal may be taken into consideration by authorities when an individual applies for Portuguese benefits. EU citizens should fill out Form E106, available from their home country's social security office.

A foreign national who is currently contributing to the compulsory social security system of his or her home country is generally not required to pay Portuguese social security premiums, provided proof of foreign coverage is filed with the local social security office. Contact a Portuguese consular office for detailed information.
