Healthcare and Medical Treatment

Qatar - Healthcare and Medical Treatment

Qatar has very good public medical facilities, with an extensive network of public hospitals and healthcare centres covering the whole country, run by the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC). Doha has four public hospitals providing a wide range of specialized medical services.

Medical treatment in HMC-run public clinics and hospitals is free of charge to Qataris and is provided at very low cost to expatriates. In order to qualify for the use of public health services, residents and visitors are required to apply for a health card from their local health centre. This costs QR100 and entitles them to receive health consultations and treatment, including inpatient care, for a nominal fee.

The government has also encouraged the development of the private health sector, and there are now many private hospitals and clinics which charge on a fee per consultation basis and reportedly now account for 67% of Qatar's health providers. The private health sector is heavily regulated by the government.

Public dental facilities are adequate but it is reportedly advisable to seek private dental care.

Most major medicines, including antibiotics, can be bought over the counter in pharmacies in Qatar.
