Social Security

Slovakia - Social Security

Citizens of EU member nations working in the Slovak Republic will generally be covered by the social security program. Credit for social security contributions outside of Slovakia may be taken into consideration by authorities when an individual applies for Slovakian benefits. EU citizens should fill out Form E106, available from their home country's social security office.

Pensions, child benefits and illness contributions are covered under the umbrella of social security. Employment security primarily covers unemployment benefits. Employees and employers both are required to make contributions to the social security, health and employment security systems. In 2003, employees contributed 13.4% of their gross salaries toward these programs combined. Employers paid in 34.4% of gross salaries.

A foreign national who is currently contributing to the compulsory social security system of his or her home country is generally not required to pay Slovakian social security premiums, provided proof of foreign coverage is filed with the local social security office. Contact a Slovakian consular office for detailed information.
