Air Travel (domestic)

Spain - Air Travel (domestic)

Due to the size of the country, one of the quickest and most convenient ways to get around Spain is by air. There are airports in every region and most of them deal with both international and domestic flights. Iberia Airlines is the main Spanish airline and it offers both types of flights. Flights can be taken to most areas of Spain although on some routes it may be necessary to make a connection. It may be that there are fewer flights on some routes during the winter months due to a reduced demand from tourists.

When travelling on a domestic flight from Madrid flight times are fairly quick no matter which part of the country that you are going to. From Madrid to Barcelona the flight time is approximately 55 minutes, while to Bilbao it is around 50 minutes. The same time should be allowed for a flight to Seville, while to Valencia it is just 30 minutes. To fly to the Canary Islands from the capital you should allow a time of 2 and a half hours and to Mallorca it is just 1 hour.

Airports such as Malaga offer regular flights to Madrid and Barcelona and these are usually available several times a day. These flights are direct but there are plenty of options that are not direct and occasionally it is not very clear when you look at the website of the airline if you need to make a connection at another airport. Only the main routes are direct flights and others will require a stop somewhere else, which can add hours to the journey. Airlines which offer internal flights from Malaga include Iberia, Clickair and Spanair.

Spanair and Iberia are the two main airlines which operate domestic flights in and out of Barcelona airport. Flying from Barcelona to Bilbao takes just 40 minutes, while flights from Barcelona to Malaga take 1 hour and 10 minutes. Barcelona to Seville is 1 hour and 10 minutes and to Valencia is less than half an hour.

A popular airline for internal flights is Vueling. The airline is based in the Catalan area but covers all the major cities in Spain including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga and Alicante. In addition the airline covers a number of routes to other European countries. Air Europa is another regional airline which covers the airports already mentioned as well as the Canary Islands.
