A brief overview of the main channels of communication in Spain:
Telephone
The main telephony service provider in Spain is Telefonica.
To get a telephone installed costs about 150 Euro. It is cheaper to transfer from an existing account, if one exists - normally about 40 Euro.
Visit your local Telefonica office to arrange connection, bringing your passport or residence card, proof of address and copy of your rental contract or property deed (escritura).
Postal Service
Spain's postal service is efficient and modern, with offices throughout the country based everywhere from small villages to international airports. Services range from traditional postage/correspondence services to banking services, including money orders. The stamps needed for mailing letters are sold at Post Offices and 'estancos' (tobacconists).
Internet
Dial-up connection is available either 'pay as you go' (local call rates) or on a monthly flat-rate plan from a service provider. (ISP)
Telefonica, among others, has a choice of packages and they can also tell you if broadband (ADSL) is available where you live (usually only in urban areas). The percentage of homes in Spain with broadband internet is still very low, though it is growing.
ISPs have various broadband packages on offer, including 'off-peak only' and unlimited access. Prices do not vary greatly from company to company.
