Taiwan - Climate and Weather



Taiwan has a sub-tropical climate, with cooler temperatures and a distinct winter season in the north of the island.

Across the country, summers are hot and humid, with typical average daytime temperatures of around 33°C (91°F). Average winter daytime temperatures are around 19°C (66°F), but it is warmer in the south, where winter daytime temperatures are often around 24°C (75°F). Temperatures are much lower in the mountains, and there is snowfall at high altitudes in the between December and February. Taiwan is often cloudy and overcast all year round, with the most sunshine in the south.

Rainfall is high during the southwest monsoon season of June to August, while the dry season extends from November to January in the north and to April in the south.

There is a risk of typhoons throughout the country from June to October. Earthquakes are also common in Taiwan, but are mostly minor.
