Thailand - Getting There

Plane

As a major tourist destination, long-haul flights to and from Bangkok are fairly easy to find. Also, they're not too expensive. More and more these days, it is also now possible to fly directly into two of Thailand's other major international airports - Chiang Mai in the north and Phuket in the south.

Since the liberalization of the Thai air industry in early 2000 (prior to which the national carrier, 'Thai', was practically a monopoly), it is now possible to fly within the region of Asia and domestically in Thailand on cheap budget airlines that have recently been established.

Boat

Thailand has several major ports that luxury and cruise liners cater to. However, more often than not, those deciding to come to Thailand by boat will arrive in Phuket and make their way overland from there.

Train

Although Thailand does have a national train service, the system is both antiquated and slow. Nonetheless, if time is not an issue, trains to Malaysia (Penang and Kuala Lumpur) and Myanmar (Burma) depart daily from Bangkok - via Hat Yai in the south and Chiang Mai in the north.

Road

Traveling to and from Thailand via road - either via bus or car - is possible. However, with problems with Myanmar in the north, the recent unrest in the south of Thailand, and bandit country on the Cambodian borders, it is not currently recommended that first time visitors to Thailand arrive via road. Once you are settled in Thailand, bus services to all of Thailand's bordering countries are popular as they are a fast and cheap means of transportation.
