The discovery of oil in 1962 resulted in a huge investment in the region's healthcare system which had previously been almost non-existent, especially outwith the major towns and cities.
Although excellent healthcare facilities can now be found in the United Arab Emirates most expatriates take out medical insurance to cover not only minor treatment but also emergency repatriation.
