Getting There

United Kingdom (UK) - Getting There

The UK is a hub of international travel, with air links to and from virtually every other country. The main airports are Heathrow and Gatwick (to the west and south of London, respectively) and Manchester (in the north of England). Heathrow is the world's busiest international airport, used by more than 67 million passengers every year. There are also some 20 other international airports throughout the United Kingdom, so it is easy to fly into virtually every region of the country.

British Airways is the national airline, but there are many independent airlines which also operate both international and domestic flights, including Virgin Atlantic and the budget airlines BMIBaby, EasyJet and RyanAir.

There are many seaports around the country, into which ferries and hovercrafts carry passengers from mainland Europe and Scandinavia. These include Dover, Folkestone, Southampton, Plymouth and Harwich in the south of England, and Hull and Newcastle in the north.

There is also a rail link with mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel (the 'Chunnel'), through which Eurostar passenger trains travel at high speed between Dover and France/Belgium. You can travel to the UK along with your car on the Eurotunnel rail shuttle or by one of the ferry services.
