Expat Experiences of Life in the USA (submit yours here)
I lived in the USA during two different periods of time, one as a child (in Connecticut) with a growing economy and much appreciated immigration workforce. And just recently stayed there for almost 4 years, in Wichita Falls Texas (With the economy as it is!). During my last stay, we travelled to California, San Francisco, and if you'd ask me where in the USA would I choose to live, definitely California....
One of the reasons we are think of leaving here is the abysmal state of the healthcare system. If your employer doesn't pay for health insurance, you will end up paying hundreds of dollars a month in premiums. People stay in crappy jobs just because of good health care benefits. ...
I moved to the US almost twenty years ago and have lived in Tennessee, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and now North Carolina. It's difficult to compare the US and the UK. You can't even compare places within the UK...I mean I grew up on the Clyde in Scotland....how would you compare that to growing up in London? It's true that in certain parts of the US (e.g., NC) your money will go a lot farther than in the UK. $150,000 will buy you a nice wee three or four bedroom detached in NC but won't go half as far in northern Virginia or New Jersey. Money is not what you should be thinking about so much in my opinion though. What kind of life do you want for yourself and any future kids? What's important to you? The US is so big and diverse that you will probably be able to find a corner that suits you.
