United States of America (USA) - Other Information Resources

Libraries

When you live in America, you can just go to the library and tell them you want 'a library card'. You may need to show them 'proof of address' (a letter or bill that has come to your home, for example) because access is restricted to the local community. Children are also permitted to have their very own library cards in the USA. In addition to public libraries, there are many private libraries in America, most notably university libraries. Access is restricted to members of the university's community, though for certain research purposes, these restrictions may be lifted.

Phone books/directories

These are distributed for free by the local telephone service provider once each year to every residence and to all businesses, libraries, etc. A 'white pages' and a 'yellow pages' are delivered. The 'white pages' have government numbers listed in a small blue section, businesses listed in a rather small red section, and private residential numbers in a much larger white section. The 'yellow pages' lists companies by type, and contains information from those who have bought advertising space.

Local government offices

Usually found in the center of a town or village, the building is often identified as the 'City Building', 'Town Hall', 'City-County Building' or similar. The phone numbers for these buildings are in the blue section of the white pages telephone directory.

Tourist information

Urban areas normally have a "visitors' center" where people who have just arrived can obtain information on local events and places of interest.

Internet

Local, State, and Federal government agencies have sites on the Internet (as do many private businesses). Internet access is also available to the public at local libraries.
