Kansas

United States of America (USA) - Kansas

Located in the Midwest region of the country, Kansas is the 34th state of the United States of America. It is the 15th largest state in terms of area and 33rd in terms of population. The state capital of Kansas is Topeka, although the largest city in the state is Wichita. Other major cities include Overland Park and Kansas City. The state of Kansas is bordered by Oklahoma, Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska.

The climate of Kansas really depends on area as it has three different climate classifications. Some parts of Kansas are as sunny as California and Arizona, while others see large amounts of rainfall. These extreme weather changes also bring thunderstorms which in turn spawn tornadoes. Kansas is actually part of the region known as Tornado Alley.

Kansas has a rich history and there are many attractions and scenic walks to be found across the state. There are many famous people originate from Kansas including Amelia Earhart and Dennis Hopper.

Kansas – Employment

Kansas is a very agricultural area, with wheat, meat, cotton and corn among the main items produced. There is farming land available for those who are prepared to go it alone, but it is a risk for those who have not had previous experience. Farm-work for non-owners is mainly seasonal. Food processing is also another main part of the state’s economy as is chemical production and mining, so there are opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers, although competition for jobs is fierce.

For skilled workers in a technical industry, aviation is where the main opportunities lie. Companies such as Cessna and Hawker Beechcraft have bases in Wichita and employ large numbers of people. There are also opportunities in oil production, though the oil industry in Kansas is beginning to decline due to rising costs. Gas production in the state is in a similar situation, but there are opportunities for those who have qualifications and experience in this field.

Kansas – Property

The highest concentration of people in the state can be found in Wichita and there are many areas to choose from. The College Hill district is one of the oldest districts in the city and has a mix of old and new properties in a wide range of architecture styles. There is a thriving commercial area with several residential areas nearby. Homes are mainly family homes, although there are apartments to both buy and rent in the area. The Downtown district of Wichita is ideal for those who like a busy area. There are several shopping malls as well as many smaller specialist retailers. There are restaurants in the area which offer cuisines from all over the world and the properties are mainly apartments although there are some family homes. Demand for property here is helping to keep the prices higher than average.

The Eastborough district is a much more upmarket area and is mainly family homes. The area has amenities for relaxing such as parks and the shops are mainly independent retailers. Homes in the area are relatively expensive when compared to other neighbourhoods. The Old Town district is a warehouse district, so there are many properties there that have been converted into apartments and which are aimed at young professionals. There is plenty of nightlife and prices are expected to rise as the development continues.

Kansas City is another option for those moving to Kansas and has several districts which are ideal for those who are looking for a real community atmosphere. The district of Armourdale is home to many Americans of Mexican origin. There are apartments and family homes in the area and property prices are very reasonable. The district of Argentine is one that developed in response to the need for homes for the workers in all the nearby industrial plants. Homes here are very reasonably priced and the area has the amenities needed for everyday life.

The district of Muncie in Kansas City has several listed historic areas and prices in those neighbourhoods are higher than in the rest of the district, but there are many family homes available. There are some apartment buildings and the area has a good schools system. The area is also ideally placed for travelling into the city centre for work.
