Minnesota
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuUnited States of America (USA) - Minnesota
The Minnesota climate can be extremely varied and droughts are not uncommon. The state also experiences tornados, blizzards and thunderstorms. Rainfall can be anywhere from 19 inches to 35 inches per year depending on the location.
There are plenty of activities to be found in Minnesota, from the quirky SPAM museum to the science museum, there is something for everyone to enjoy. There are also many famous people from Minnesota, including Judy Garland and Charles Schultz.
Minnesota – Employment
Minnesota has an unemployment rate of just over 7%, which is lower than many other states. The state is home to some of the largest companies in the US, offering employment opportunities for workers at all levels. These include Carlson Companies, 3M and General Mills. Agriculture is a large part of the economy of the state but there are relatively few people employed in this area and there are few opportunities for newcomers. This area is also risky for those who are considering their own farm or business connected to agriculture.
Manufacturing and mining are some of the main areas for employment in the region. There are opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers, although competition for jobs is strong. The opportunities are good for those who have experience in technology and biomedical research as there are several firms working in this sector. Forestry and the timber industry also contribute a great deal to the state’s economy but again, there are few vacancies.
Minnesota – Property
Minnesota has several large cities that have both work and residential options for expats. Minneapolis is the largest city in the state and there are several districts that may appeal to expats. The Dinkytown district is a fairly small area close to the University and has a large student community. Properties here are mainly to rent rather than buy and are very reasonably priced. The area has a lively entertainment sector, with nightclubs, restaurants and bars. The Downtown district is a mix of residential and commercial areas with a variety of shops available. There have been many buildings converted into apartments and the area is fashionable with young professionals. Prices are on a par with the regional average but are expected to rise as the development continues.
The Linden Hills district is a popular area and has many period buildings. Prices are not the cheapest but it is possible to find affordable housing there. The area is popular with families as it has all the amenities for daily life, but also attracts large numbers of tourists so it is not the most tranquil of neighbourhoods. Loring Park is an area which has a large residential section as well as many businesses. The area is popular with families and the homes there range from apartments to single family homes, and prices are very reasonable. The Riverfront area is a very attractive part of town. There are many historic buildings and the homes there are much sought after, which helps to keep the prices high though a bargain can be found if you are patient.
The city of St Paul has many districts which would appeal to new residents. St Anthony Park is close to the University and is home to a large student community as well as families. There are people of all backgrounds in this area and the properties are fairly inexpensive. The area has many sports venues that can be used by all the family, as well as shops and restaurants. The Summit Avenue Area has many period houses and as a result residents pay more for their homes. Homes in the area are in demand, but the region has everything a family needs from churches for all faiths to schools, so the community is very mixed but welcoming to newcomers.
