Mississippi
Back to top Back to main Skip to menuUnited States of America (USA) - Mississippi
Winters in Mississippi are usually very mild due to the humid subtropical climate the state enjoys. The summers are long, and winters are relatively short. The summer sees a fairly constant temperature throughout the whole state, but winter temperatures can vary greatly depending on location. Inland regions tend to be cooler than the coastal areas.
There are many famous faces from Mississippi including Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey and James Earl Jones.
Mississippi – Employment
Mississippi has an unemployment rate of more than 10%, which makes it a little harder to find work in the area, but if you have the right skills and qualifications then there are opportunities for you. One of the main sources of income for the Mississippi economy is gambling. There are many casinos in the region and there may be opportunities there for experienced staff as well as administrative and managerial roles. Healthcare professionals will find that there are opportunities in local hospitals as there is a shortage of qualified doctors and nurses, but foreign professionals will need to undergo local assessment in order to obtain a license to practise.
The state has one of the lowest average household incomes in the country and there are very few other industries which contribute a great deal to the economy. Those who are interested in starting their own business may find it difficult unless they really do have a gap in the market product or idea. The recent economic problems have hit the state very hard.
Mississippi – Property
Jackson is the largest city in Mississippi and has a real mix of districts. The area of Farish Street, for example, is traditionally home to a large African-American community. It is a large district and has a range of properties to suit all tastes, from studio apartments to large family homes. Prices there are very reasonable and the area has many amenities for the whole family. The Downtown district is home to a number of popular tourist attractions as well as a wide range of commercial enterprises, which means that the area is busy night and day. The properties on offer are mainly apartments though there are some townhouses available. The area is very popular with young professionals.
The Fondren district is a cultural area and home to many art galleries and antiques shops and prices of properties are quite high due to the demand for homes in the area. The Mid North area of the city is mainly residential but has some museums and sporting venues. The homes in the area are mainly single family homes, many of which have large gardens and prices are very reasonable. The area has a good schools system as well as other amenities essential for everyday life.
The Ridgeland area is outside the main part of the city but is popular with residents. The area has a wide range of shops and entertainment venues and the properties are mainly single family homes. The area is very inexpensive when compared with some other districts and ideal for those who want to live in a friendly community.
The city of Olive Branch has grown rapidly over the last 25 years, with many young people choosing to move to the area when they are looking for work and the absorption of several outlying towns adding to the population. Many have young families and there is a small expat community already in the city. The districts in the city range from very tranquil neighbourhoods to busy commercial areas and property prices are on a par with the regional average. The city is noted for good schools and good entertainment venues, and large numbers of people are choosing to relocate to the area each year.
