New Mexico is the 47th state of the United States of America and is ranked 5th largest state in terms of area. It is also ranked 36th largest in terms of population. Located in the south western region of the country, New Mexico is bordered with Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado. It is also one of the ‘Four Corner’ states and its north western corner touches Utah. The state capital of New Mexico is Santa Fe although its largest city is Albuquerque. Other major cities in New Mexico are Las Cruces, Rio Rancho and Roswell.

New Mexico is arid and dry desert area, the average rainfall is just 9 inches per year. Daytime summer temperatures can often reach 38 degrees and winter temperatures can average around 18 degrees. The mountain areas can be much cooler throughout the year.

New Mexico – Employment

The economy of the state relies heavily on the oil and gas industries as well as tourism. There are many opportunities for those who are experienced in the oil and gas areas, particularly at senior management level and for those who have specialised in one particular area. Many of these companies are international and some are happy to transfer workers in from other countries, which makes it easier when applying for visas and work permits.

The unemployment rate is around 8.5% so for unskilled and seasonal work the competition for jobs is fierce. There are opportunities and incentives in the state for those who want to start their own businesses. These can take the form of tax credits, but are mainly applicable for those who intend to create jobs in the area.

New Mexico – Property

New Mexico is a popular destination for expats and there are some large cities there which have a variety of districts to choose from when deciding where to live. The largest city is Albuquerque, which has many work opportunities and attracts those who are interested in outdoor sporting activities. For example, the Downtown district is ideal for those who like clubbing and theatre as there are many entertainment venues. Property in the area is much sought after and prices are rising steadily. Accommodation is mainly in the form of apartments. The Nob Hill district is home to the university, so there is a large student population and many properties in the area are available to rent. This district also has an area ideal for those who like the bohemian lifestyle, with a range of ethnic shops and restaurants. The properties are very reasonably priced and there is a range of family homes of all sizes.

The Old Town district is the historic part of the city and has many period properties available. The Spanish influences can be clearly seen in the houses, shops and other buildings. Property in this area is priced higher than average, mainly due to the demand, but the area has good schools, shops and leisure facilities, so it is ideal for those with families. The North and South Valley areas are major tourist attractions so can become very busy, but there are residential areas which are mainly detached family homes. Prices are very reasonable and the area has all the amenities needed for daily life.

Santa Fe is another popular destination for expats. It is one of the oldest cities in the state and as such has areas which are much sought after and more expensive than the regional average. For example the West Alameda district is known for older houses, is close to the Downtown area and properties can be bought for a very reasonable price. The area is known for being value for money and is popular with newcomers to the city. In contrast the South Capitol area is a much more recent development, filled with single storey family homes. Properties in this area do not stay on the market long so if you find one that you want you need to act quickly. The Eastside has a wide variety of property, from small homes to large estates, so prices cover a wide bracket and the area has good schools and other amenities.
