Property Types

United States (USA) - Property Types

QUICK LINKS: USA Guide - USA Discussion Forum - USA Property Listings

The following are some of the property types typically found in the US:

Apartment: An apartment is generally a one level home within a building. Sometimes called a flat, the apartment may have as many as three bedrooms. Apartments are often smaller than homes, but they do not include any actual land purchase. Apartments are the most commonly rented property by foreign nationals.

Single Family Home: Single family homes are the most common type of home in the United States. There are various styles to consider, including the bungalow, Victorian and ranch styles. Each offers something unique - the Victorian offers more ornamental detailing while the bungalow is simplistic. Both are often two floors. A ranch home is a single story. Most single family homes are on plots of land.

Duplex Homes: When two separate living quarters are within the same building, generally in a top and bottom or side-by-side fashion, this is called a duplex home. In some cases, the owner will live in one portion while renting out the other.

Townhomes/Condominiums: These properties are located next to each other through each unit is separate. They can range from single floors to several floors. In some cases, the units are part of a homeowner’s association in which maintenance fees are paid by the owner to the association which then takes care of the property.

Mansions: Larger homes and homes that are more expensive are often referred to as mansions in the United States. However, every location is different as far as defining exactly what this term means.
