Only French citizens aged 18 or over are eligible to vote in French (presidential and parliamentary) elections. However, foreign EU citizens who are resident in France CAN vote in elections to the European Parliament and local municipal elections as long as they have lived in the area for at least 6 months and registered at the local town hall.
Presidential elections:
- Held every 5 years, the winner needs an absolute majority. Without it, a second ballot takes place between the 2 candidates with the most votes from the first round.
Parliamentary elections to the National Assembly:
- Held every 5 years, using a 'first past the post' system, as with presidential elections (see above). 'Deputies' (deputes) are elected to the National Assembly.
Local government elections:
- Held every 6 years, to elect councillors (conseillers) for France's 22 regions (regions) and 96 departments (departements). Local mayors are also elected.
