Eastern France has a moderate continental climate, where winters are cold and summers are hot but also stormy.
The climate in central areas is extreme continental, with uncomfortably hot summers and freezing winters which result in the highest heating bills in France.

Mountainous regions (the Alps and Pyrenees) are prone to extreme conditions - from winters of heavy snow to hot summers. Weather in the Midi (between the Pyrenees and Alps) is dry and hot, but spring may bring heavy rainfall.
