France - Taxation

Page: 2/2

Once a year in February, you will need to complete and send in a tax return ("declaration de revenus"), with details of your income for the previous year (see below comment). This should then be sent to your local tax office ("centre des Impots").

For more information on taxation in France, contact one or more of the following:

Service de la Legislation Fiscale
Sous-Direction E
139, rue de Bercy 75574 PARIS Cedex 12

Telephone: 00 33 140 24 90 61

The Centre for Non-Residents
Telephone: 0845 070 0040 or +44 151 210 2222

http://www.service-public.fr - the French civil service website, look under 'Impot, taxe et douane' for tax info (all in French)

French Chamber of Commerce in London - telephone 020 7304 7021

The French Tax Office has a telephone helpline - 08 20 32 42 52

A last word about taxes in France - VAT is payable on all goods delivered and all services provided in France. VAT is also payable on food.

Added by Pauline 28/10/04 - If you have worked in France you can claim the 'prime pour l'emploi' which is calculated on the amount of hours you and/or your spouse have worked. If you have been on low wages, you actually get a cheque off the tax department as opposed to a tax bill! Strange but true, a tax rebate although you haven't paid any tax!

Added 06/03/06 by Pomhorn - "From this year onward the tax forms will no longer come in February, but only by end of April and have to be filled in by end of March.
When you have to make the 1st return, these forms will not come AUTOMATICALLY, but you will need to fetch them yourself".
