Thailand - Healthcare and Medical Treatment

Page: 2/2

Pharmacies can be located at all major shopping malls. In most cases, however, Thais do not have a 'general practitioner' doctor - and if you fall ill (even with a common cold) you'll need to visit a hospital.

Added 10/5/2007 by Robert:
My recent trip to Udon Thani found me admitted to a local hospital with a serious case of pnumonia. Things seemed to be getting out of control so I was transferred to Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok on the recommendation from friends in the states. I have to say that I was most pleased with every aspect of this great hospital. My doctors and nurses all spoke good to excellent English. Everything was explained to me and I was treated with care and respect by everyone.Being an international hospital I met people from countries I probably would not have had the opportunity to become aquainted with under normal circumstances. If I ever needed hospitalization and had time I would go to this hospital.

I find the hospitals in Bangkok definitely good, but whenever I need serious treatment for my family, I still prefer to go to Singapore. The communication is still a huge problem, even in Bumrungrad or Samitivej. Thai doctors also don't explain much and things are often messy and disorganised. I absolutely prefer Singaporean hospitals, like Mouth Elizabeth or Gleneagles. They have a rep-office in Bangkok now and it is really helpful for other expats I think to know that they can check for alternatives. If I am right the email is parkwaygroupbkk@yahoo.com and the website www.pgh.com.sg

All of the benefits of highly-qualified English speaking doctors and dentists are to be had in Chiang Mai too, but at somewhat less cost and a better city atmosphere.
