Portugal - Retiring to Portugal and Pension Issues
Page: 2/2
Public service pensions are generally tax-exempt in Portugal when taxed in the country of origin.
National insurance retirement pensions may be exempt from taxes in the country of origin, but may be considered taxable income in Portugal. Again, if in any doubt consult a tax professional.
Note: Pension income is usually tax exempt up to a certain amount (Euros 7,805 in 2000), but this exemption will be decreased if your income is over Euros 72,000. Check with a finance expert for current figures on this exemption.
