UK REG CAR WITH NO CAR TAX OR MOT - HELP

Post Posted: Wed Apr 25, 2007 2:25 am

Anyone got any suggestions.

My car was registered in the UK last year and I don't seem to be able to get a Portuguese MOT.

It doesn't have any tax as the UK tax has expired and not able to get Portuguese road tax yet.

You say your car was registered last year but how old is it?

Twelve years old! The MOT people here only seem to be interested in it registration date.

Most people I have spoken to about MOT's have had no problem at all. The only complaint or problem has been cars that are 3 years old, as in Portugal cars do not need to be MOT'd until 4 years old. This is been overcome though with an explanation and certificate issued.
One worrying development is a couple of people have told me that they have had MOT done and then had a knock at the door from some nice uniformed chaps!! Is information being shared?!
If proper road tax is introduced next year I wondered whether the new rules will cater for foreign registered vehicles, especially if this coincides with a change in import tax?

Hi
For now I would definitely SORN the car. We have just been fined £40 for not SORNing the car as we have it in Portugal, it is off the road but for reading the form and taking it literally ie DO NOT SORN your car if it is temporarily abroad, so we didnt and now got fined. Have talked to someone in Swansea, and they said to SORN the thing. I must say I have seen many cars on the Algarve with UK reg and no tax so I would be pleased to read what they do. I assume rightly or wrongly that they are running around illegally and hoping not to get caught!!!!! By the way the SORN business happened to us last week.
