Personal preferances, expectations and budgets are all factors which determin where an individual would like to live. But where would YOU go to live once you arrive in Malta?
Personally, I chose Marsascala. Marsascala is one of Malta's last remaining authentic fishing villages. Here you get a good mix of local, quite lifestyle, a fairly resonable rent, and yet a step away from some lively nightlife in summer.
Marsascala boasts some lovely fish food restaurants which are modestly priced, and has a small expat community. Expats enjoy meeting on the Marsascala promenade by the sea over a refreshing beer.
The locals ere are particularly friendly. Summer can get quite busy though, with many Maltese choosing Marsascala as their summer residence. However, unlike other "summer residence towns" like Qawra and Bugibba, Marsascala remains very pleasant and is not so overcrowded.
Where do you live? Why do you like it there? Or what do you hate about where you live?

I'd be very interested in hearing more replies to this question from those expats living in Malta, and from those who've visited and are considering living there, what places appealed to you most and why.
It would also be interesting to know how you chose your location.
(or did it choose you?)
I'm thinking of moving to Malta with my family, and am especially interested to hear which areas people may think are best for a family to live.

Hi sunchaser50,
The area you would finally end up chossing to live will greatly depend on your lifestyle preferences. For example, do you like pubbing and nightlife? Or would you prefer a quite location? What are your budgets? Do you need schooling? Will you be driving or do you need easy access to the public transport?

onHello trigger571,
Thanks for your reply. Especially with our young daughter, we're not much for the nightlife or pubbing scene, but do like to go for good music sometimes. We spend a fair amount of time at home, so a quieter location would be nice, but we don't want to be far from people, shopping, etc.
Our daughter is seven, so school will be an issue, it would be great for her to be close to a good school. I imagine we'll have a car, but would use public transport if it were convenient.
I found Marsascala (courtesy of Google Earth) on the north-eastern end of the island. Did you spend much time there before deciding to live there? What other places appealed to you?

Hi sunchaser50,
I did spend a long time in Marsascala before finally stopping there. I live in a sea view apartment - 2 bedroom and pay 495 euro per month rent and love it. Its quite in the winter, lively in summer and a swim in the crystal clear sea is just beyond my door step - literally! The people are quite friendly and there is also a small community of expats. The only school I know of there is a Government one, but I hear it is very good.
If the sea is not important for you, then Swieqi might be an option. You can get some pretty maisonettes there and its a nice area as long as you are not to close to a place called Paceville. From swieqi, you will have access to a number of good schools too.
There are some very beutyful developments going up in Tigne Point, and also Msida. However, only look at these if you can spare around 2000 euro per month on rent.
Personally, my favourite remains the south. Villages like Zejtun, Marsascala, and Marsaxlokk all have tons of character to offer. Zejtun is still a bit stigmatised because of its political past (1980's) but I can assure you the people are very friendly and you can get some fine character houses there.
Generally speaking, the south offers true med life and is still very 'Maltese'.

I just came back from Malta a few weeks ago, my husband and I are considering a move there. He is Maltese although left Malta when he was seventeen, now he is a Maltese citizen, a Canadian citizen and a US citizen, I am American, we live in Canada at the moment. We are in our late fifties
While we were there we did look a little around for accomadations and were told that Marsascala was a good place and all that the previous poster mentioned.
I was just wondering though how we can find an apartment for 490Euro's per month or lower, we haven't seen anything decent in that price range although we haven't really covered that area very well.
Can you tell me which is the best way to go about finding rentals?

Hi docjeun,
I know this reply comes really, really, really late, and apologies for that. If you are still looking for an apartment please let me know.
Regards
Marcel
