I was reading an article on the Canada forum, and it got me thinking about health care provision, as many will doubtless know, in the UK there is the NHS.

What is the situatuion in Canada regarding provision?

Thank you.

Colin :

Each of the Provinces has it's own health care insurance plan, that covers all medical care, either in the hospital, at a Dcotor's office, or at a "walk in clinic ".

You pay a monthly health care premium, through your employer's payroll department. There are two levels of cost, single person or familiy rate, and in Ontario the single person rate is seven hundred dollars, for the entire year. In return, you don't pay for any treatment that is medically nessesary.

What isn't covered ? Dental care, eyeglases, and chiropratic care, plus alternative stuff like accupuncture and herbalists. Prescription drugs are not covered, but many employers offer private medical insurance plans, that do cover other things, as a part of their employee benefit plan, with the company paying part and the employee paying the rest of the costs.

If you are injured while working, the Worker's Compensation Plan will cover your medical treatment, and pay you a percentage of your normal wages while you are not able to work. Each of the Provinces has it;s own WCB plan.

If you are self employed you can buy private insurance that will pay you if you are sick or injured, and can't work, but you pay the premiums out of your business income.

Here is a link to the Ontario Hospital Insurance Plan website, for general information about how it works.

Jim

That seems very similar to the UK system, thanks.
