Where to Retire in Australia (second edition)

by Jill and Owen Weeks

Explore Australia Publishing Pty Ltd
ISBN 1 74117 127 X

Books aimed at particular expat groups tend to be some of the most valuable and this guide for retirees heading to Australia is no exception. Based on extensive research this guide is comprehensive in both geographical terms (covering every Australian state) and in the range of subject matter covered. The authors have been sure to include information of the greatest relevance to those looking to retire: medical facilities and security are given high priority and leisure activities discussed include some not found in most other expat guides (bowls and gardening to name two!)

Particularly pleasing is the inclusion of feedback gathered from local residents in various locations, there really is no better way of finding out what life is really like in a particular place. The authors also include their own recommendations based on their own experiences. Special mention should also go to the book's publishers for putting together such a well presented guide - maps are clear, facts and contact details are easily accessible and there are numerous colour photographs included in each chapter.

From an expat perspective the book could, perhaps, benefit from the inclusion of more information in the final chapter, "Retiring to Australia from Overseas", but contact details of appropriate organisations are included for those looking for further guidance and advice. In fairness, though, this is a book about where to retire to in Australia, not how to retire there, and in this area it succeeds admirably. Recommended.
